Incredibly, the group created all that on the strength of only a six-track, two-compilation catalog — with its last release, 2012’s “Don’t You Worry Child,” becoming its biggest hit by far when it spent three weeks at No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100. And then, at the height of its success in 2013, the trio broke up, devastating and shocking dance fans worldwide. In 2008, three artists, DJs, and musicians got together to break every rule in electronic music. Steve Angello, Sebastian Ingrosso, and Axwell, who make up Swedish House Mafia, added swaggering hip-hop beats, a rock ‘n’ roll attitude, and a big-screen-worthy grandeur to house music. Details of the debut album - including its release date - are still vague; but it sees the trio emerging from suspended animation, just as their biggest heroes called it quits.

Unsure how to balance the demands of the group with their solo projects, Axwell says that “maybe we weren’t focused enough, or didn’t know what to do”. Either way, two months after closing out Coachella’s mainstage after headliners The Black Keys, they announced their farewell tour. They seem to have come to terms with all of this now though, as they reunited in 2021 with a new single with The Weeknd titled “Moth To A Flame” (which was well-received by fans, having been played over 100 million times in 2021 alone). On June 23, 2012, Swedish House Mafia announced their split and revealed that their remaining shows listed on their website would be their last. “Today we want to share with you that the tour we are about to go on will be our last, they said. We came, we raved, we loved.” The news caught much of the dance world by surprise, but behind the magical curtain, things were not as glossy as they seemed.

"I've never seen a whole festival empty and come to just one stage," says Ingrosso. The three members even stayed in separate hotels to avoid being seen together. But rumours began flying after Angello cancelled an Asian tour and flew to Miami. At the time, the band chose to portray the split as going out on a high. The band are, however, more cagey about who else appears on the album because they’re still finalising everything, but it won’t be long until we find out. This album, named after the feeling of being on stage together again, is “an invitation into our world”, according to Angello.
And I got to say, the smaller gigs in a dark club at 4am have definitely been my favourite ones, whereas the big main act festival gigs tend to be a bit too predictable, commercial, and choreographed for my taste. You can refer to their music in more simple terms as Swedish or European House Music, walking in the footsteps of European EDM artists such as Daft Punk and Tiesto. As dinner draws to a close, Angello and Ingrosso return from their second smoking break. Paradise Again, says Angello, is “just the beginning,” adding that they have enough music for a couple more albums yet. “You always want people to like your music, otherwise you wouldn’t play it to them,” says Ingrosso. “But the vision of the album, for me, it’s not really important if it sells 400 million [copies] or 10.” As Angello points out, they’ve already achieved something that, for so long, was more elusive. Five years later, it seemed like the group might reunite when it closed out Ultra’s 20th anniversary in Miami. But, as the members now say, behind-the-scenes problems at that show underscored just how much of a change a true reunion would have necessitated.
